Why Insurers Are Denying Cancer Imaging Tests
The article, published August 31, 2026 by investigative journalist Misha Valencia, follows a stage 4 breast cancer patient whose insurer denied a routine PET scan as “not medically necessary,” despite six years of prior approvals for the same test. It cites a JAMA Network study finding that 22% of cancer patients didn’t receive the care their treatment team recommended because of insurance denials and delays, and notes that PET scans, despite being a proven diagnostic standard for staging cancer, are turned down by insurers at high rates.
Scott Glovsky’s Advice for Patients Facing a Denial
Glovsky, who represents cancer patients denied imaging coverage by their insurers, told HealthyWomen that insurers often treat delay as a financial strategy: the longer a claim sits unresolved, the less they may ultimately have to pay out. His advice to patients is direct: file an expedited appeal as soon as a denial comes in, and don’t treat the first no as the final answer.
